Sergio Mata

Sergio Mata is a Trumpeter, Vocalist, and Vihuela player for Mariachi Flor del Desierto. He also works as a Automotive Technician at Rogers Ford and Lincoln. His love for Mariachi was inspired by his father and brother, who both enjoyed singing and playing guitar. Music has always been a major part of his soul.

Sergio always enjoyed singing growing up. Whether it be along with the radio on a drive, or at a family gathering. He began experimenting with instruments in the 6th grade, starting with the cello. In middle school he began to learn to play the trumpet in the Alamo Band. He continued to play the trumpet throughout High school and joined the OHS Mariachi program while continuing to play in the OHS Band and later joining the OHS Jazz Band. Wanting to further challenge himself and learn new skills, Sergio began to learn to play the guitar and the vihuela in his free time. He auditioned into the varsity mariachi ensemble, Mariachi Broncho, his sophomore year and competed at the UIL State Mariachi competition for 3 consecutive years as a vocalist and trumpeter, achieving a division 1 rating with his ensemble during his senior year. Outside of school, he performed with a local mariachi group.

After graduating from Odessa High School, Sergio began working as an apprentice technician and began to study in the Ford Asset program at Odessa College to pursue a career in Automotive and Diesel Technology, later graduating in May of 2023 and becoming a Ford Certified Technician.

Sergio joined Mariachi Flor del Deserto in January of 2023, performing at many events including Fiesta West Texas. He later began to volunteer for the UTPB Mariachi Halcones as a trumpeter and vocalist.
